PawNovo Nous 30V

An automated molecular platform for veterinary point-of-care testing

The PawNovo Nous 30V is a fully automatic molecular diagnostic system for veterinary use. It combines magnetic bead-based nucleic acid extraction with multiplex real-time PCR (qPCR) in a closed cartridge system: extraction, washing and amplification are carried out inside the cartridge, isolated from the external environment.

Each cartridge arrives prefilled with extraction reagents and magnetic beads, with lyophilised PCR mix that the manufacturer states can be transported and stored at room temperature. Once the specimen is added and the run is started, processing and analysis are automated — the manufacturer states hands-on time of about one minute after specimen collection, and an analysis time of approximately 30–45 minutes, depending on assay and workflow. A run accepts two cartridges and up to eight assay targets, depending on panel configuration. Each cartridge includes an internal control to monitor the sampling process.

The manufacturer describes anti-contamination measures including rotating magnet-sleeve mixing, mineral-oil sealing of the reaction, airtight amplification, an alcohol-free reagent formula, UV irradiation, membrane filtration and an aerosol-eliminating spray.

The compact, integrated instrument occupies a footprint the manufacturer states at approximately 0.04 m³ and weighs 16 kg, placing automated molecular testing within reach of practices where bench space is limited.

The analysis time is stated by the manufacturer and refers to instrument run time only. It is not a guarantee of total case turnaround and does not include specimen collection, any required specimen preparation, or result review by the attending veterinarian.

From Specimen to Molecular Result

A conceptual view of the Nous 30V workflow

The workflow below is a conceptual summary for orientation only — it is not an operating procedure. Specimen collection, any required specimen preparation and instrument operation follow the sampling instructions and instructions for use of each assay, performed by trained personnel.

  1. Ready-to-use reagents

The cartridge arrives prefilled with extraction reagents and magnetic beads; the PCR mix is lyophilised.

Manufacturer states: room-temperature transport and storage.

  2. Specimen added

The appropriate specimen for the chosen panel is added to the cartridge according to that assay’s sampling instructions.

  3. Run started

The cartridge is loaded and the run is set up on the instrument.

  4. Automated processing and analysis

Extraction, purification and multiplex qPCR proceed in the closed cartridge; the instrument reports the result.

Manufacturer-stated analysis time of approximately 30–45 minutes, depending on assay and workflow.

Manufacturer-stated figures. Hands-on time of about one minute refers to steps performed by the operator after specimen collection; some specimen types require preparation before loading. Analysis time is instrument run time only and is not a guarantee of total case turnaround; it excludes specimen collection, preparation and veterinary review of results.

Understanding Veterinary PCR Results

Detection supports diagnosis — it is not a diagnosis by itself

A molecular assay detects pathogen nucleic acid in the specimen provided. A positive result indicates the genetic material of the target was present in that sample; interpreting what that means for the patient belongs to the attending veterinarian, alongside clinical signs, history, vaccination status and other findings.

Specimen selection and timing matter

The specimen type collected, the site sampled and the stage of illness all influence the result. The assay’s sampling instructions identify the appropriate specimen for each panel and should be followed.

A negative result has limitations

A negative result does not exclude infection. Pathogen levels may be below the assay’s detection level, the specimen may have been collected from a site or at a time when the pathogen was not present in detectable amounts, or specimen handling may have affected the result. Where clinical suspicion remains, the attending veterinarian may recommend repeat or alternative testing.

Interpretation is veterinarian-led

Results from these assays are one input into a clinical assessment made by the attending veterinarian. Follow-up testing, treatment and monitoring decisions rest with the veterinary team.
